Decades ago, recessed lighting was bulky, inefficient, and short-lived. Early downlights relied on incandescent or halogen bulbs, which produced more heat than light and consumed enormous amounts of electricity. Then came compact fluorescents (CFLs), which improved efficiency but introduced problems like slow warm-up, harsh light quality, and mercury content.
